County libraries will mark 40 years
The Washington County Library system will celebrate its 40th year of existence this year as the Washington County Board of Commissioners proclaimed observance of April 2-8, 2006 as National Library Week. Almost 40 years ago, on May 4, 1966, county commissioners voted to establish the Washington County Library. Over the years, Washington County Library has grown to include nine branch libraries located throughout the county, with associate libraries in the cities of Stillwater and Bayport. In 2005, Washington County Library served over 143,000 library card holders and circulated almost 2,000,000 items. Planning is underway for a new branch library facility that will be a part of the Washington County Service Center in Forest Lake. The new Forest Lake library is slated to open in the late summer of 2007.
