County sets ballot conservation plan

Washington County voters will see a land conversation initiative on the general election ballot this November. The Washington County Board of Commissioners on March 21 approved a resolution requesting voter approval to issue and sell bonds in an amount up to $20 million to fund land conservation initiatives within the county. If approved by voters the initiative would fund acquisitions of land to protect water quality, purchase parkland, preserve wetlands and woodlands and protect land along lakes and rivers from development. The proposal would cost landowners approximately $12 per year for 10 years for each $100,000 in property value. Agricultural land and noncommercial seasonal properties would be exempt.
