County urges food shelf support
The Washington County Board of Commissioners is encouraging residents to remember their food shelves this season. Last year more than 1.7 million visits were made to Minnesota food shelves and over 38 million pounds of food were distributed. More than half of the hungry who visit local food shelves are children, and in the Twin Cities suburbs, over 60 percent of those using food shelves are the working poor. ìThis is probably one of the best partnerships we can enter into as a county board,î Commissioner Myra Peterson said, explaining that active food shelves can help keep people off public assistance. At least 10 food shelves serve Washington County residents. Those looking for one near their home or business can telephone United Wayís First Call for Help by dialing 211. Both those who wish to donate and those who need to use the services of local food shelves are encouraged to call. In April, donations to food shelves in the Minnesota FoodShare network will be proportionally matched by the Feinstein Foundation.
