The making of a city: Columbus special election set Sept. 12

Glen Strandberg
Staff Writer

Citizens of Columbus Township have a unique opportunity before them. They will be responsible for transitioning the government from a town to a city. For the registered voter, that important transition will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 12.

For interested candidates, the filing period begins Tuesday, Aug. 15 and expires on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

As ordered by Administrative Law Judge Beverly Jones Heydinger, the Town of Columbus will elect its first mayor and four city council members on that second Tuesday in September.

Local elections for the soon-to-be ìCity of Columbusî will be held at the town hall from 7 a.m. - 8 p.m.

The newly elected officials will serve at-large until January 1, 2007 for the ìCity of Columbus,î which means they will represent all residents of the city.

The town will officially become the city of Columbus upon the verification of election results, and when the new officers take the oath of office.

There will still be a municipal election on Tuesday, Nov. 7 to elect a mayor to a two-year term as well as electing two council members to four-year terms, and two council members to two-year terms.

For those hoping for absentee voting it must be done at Anoka County. Or, if the expectation is to vote by mail, registered voters can pick up an application at town hall.

Filing Info

Persons interested in running for office at the September 12 election can pick up an affidavit of candidacy at town hall.

There is a $2 filing fee and candidates must be at least 21 years old and live in the district for at least 30 days before the election.

The affidavit has to be notarized, with the original signature going to the town hall and dropped off in person. These should not be taken to Anoka County.
