County OKís waste processing deal

A deal for waste processing is now in hand in Washington County. The Washington County Board on Aug. 22 approved terms of a new agreement relating to the operation of the Ramsey/Washington County Resource Recovery Project. The project minimizes Ramsey and Washington countiesí dependence on landfills by processing waste into a fuel called Refuse Derived Fuel. A resource recovery plant based in Newport produces the fuel which has been used in place of coal at power plants. The new agreement recognizes the expected transfer of ownership for the plant from NRG, which was once a subsidiary of Northern States Power, to a new company, Resource Recovery Technologies LLC. Judy Hunter, Washington Countyís liaison with the project, noted that 17 million tons of waste has been processed at the plant since 1993.
