County OKís solid waste agreement
The Washington County Board of Commissioners last week authorized execution of a joint powers agreement with Ramsey County which renews both countiesí commitments to sound management of solid waste and hazardous waste. The two counties have been cooperating since 1982 on projects to recycle county waste and convert it into fuel. The new joint powers agreement became necessary with the transfer of ownership on the Resource Recovery Plant in Newport to a new firm, Resource Recover Technologies, Inc. The plant coverts solid waste into fuel. The county board also approved a 2007 resource recovery budget of $5.1 million covering payments to RRT as well as a school-based ìFood to Livestockî recycling initiative which encourages children to help recycle school cafeteria refuse into livestock feed. The amended 2007 budget for the program is $387,000 less than originally anticipated.
