For the third straight year the Forest Lake High School boys Nordic ski team won the Suburban East Conference classic sprint relays, while the girls placed third.

The pair of Ted Steiner and Leif Nordgren took first overall with a time of 13:56. On the girls side, the tandem of Annie Dehmlow and Kristi Jo Buerkle placed second overall.

Aside from all the high school races, the Rangers have been competing in USSA races in an attempt to qualify for the USSA Junior National races.

Leif Nordgrenís second place finish in Telemark, WI, earned him a trip to compete in Houghton, MI, in March in the national race. Nordgren joined teammates Ben Fick, Annie Dehmlow and Roman Morris who have already secured a trip to the national race. Steiner, Katelynn Babbitt and Zac Clark are all alternates.

ìThings are progressing very well and weíre excited,î Rangers head coach Deno Johnson said. ìThe kids have reacted well to the training and theyíre getting ready for the big ìchampionship seasonî with the conference championship, section and state races all coming up.î

The one Ranger skier who didnít compete with the team this week was Fick. Fick has a good excuse as heís off with the U.S. junior national ski team as they compete in Sweden.

In his first race in Falun Sweden Fick took fifth in a race that featured the U.S. team and several top clubs from Sweden. Fick was one minute behind the winner of the race. U.S. skiers took first, third and fifth in the race.
