The Forest Lake High School girls basketball team knew they had a tough week ahead of them when the two teamís they were going to face had a combined record of 27-6, but the Rangers came out prepared and gave both Park (Cottage grove) and Champlin Park some stiff competition.
The Rangers started the week last Tuesday hosting then 13-3 Park (Cottage Grove). Stingy defense on the Rangers part led to a 15-13 Rangers lead at the half. The Rangers kept up the strong defensive effort while getting a few more points, going on to win the game 38-28.
ìOut defense was outstanding,î Rangers head coach Jen Wagner said. ìIt was a very exciting game, especially since it was parents night and the gym was packed.î
Renee Frericks led the Rangers in scoring with 10 points, followed by both Alisha Johnson and Andrea Thompson who had eight points a piece. Defensively Anne Berner had six blocks, while several Rangers recorded two steals in the game.
The competition didnít get any easier Saturday when the Rangers hosted then 14-3 Champlin Park. The Rangers defense wasnít as stingy, but they did manage to score a few more points. Champlin Park had a 37-33 lead at the half that led to a 70-53 defeat of the Rangers.
ìJenny Theisen (of Champlin Park) was too much for us to contain as she had 29 points,î Wagner said. ìI think she missed one shot all night.î
Janelle Winiecki scored 16 points in the game, followed by Berner who had 11 and Frericks who had nine.
The Rangers next game is at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they host Woodbury.
