With the regular season quickly coming to an end for the Forest Lake High School girls hockey team, theyíre focusing on preparing for section playoffs. A 2-1 overtime victory over Park (Cottage Grove) this week will certainly help the teamís morale heading into sections.

ìThe team really came out and played well,î Rangers head coach Paul Kendrick said. ìPark (Cottage Grove) have improved a lot since the last time we played them despite struggling for a win in the (Suburban East) Conference.î

The Rangers and Park (Cottage Grove) battled back and forth to a scoreless first two periods, then Park (Cottage Grove) got on the board after a defensive breakdown by the Rangers.

ìWeíre working at improving our overall game and I thought our defensive zone coverage was better,î Kendrick said. ìThe girls stepped up and took pride in that, knowing weíre going to need to play some excellent defense in the playoffs to make a run.î

Alexa Nelson netted a goal to tie things up with about three minutes to play.

ìI thought our forwards were moving the puck well in the offensive zone and we had some excellent opportunities that we just couldnít put away,î Kendrick said, ìbut it wasnít due to a lack of effort.î

Neither team was able to break the tie so the game went into overtime where Anna Johnson scored the game winning goal for the Rangers.

ìWeíre excited about the win,î Kendrick said.

The Rangers next game is at 3 p.m. Saturday when they play at Mounds View to end the regular season.
