Hastings ruins historic night

The stage was set perfectly Friday night as Senior Jordan Kolbow was looking to break Troy Marrís career victory record of 164 victories and the Forest Lake High School wrestling team was looking to stake its claim as Suburban East Conference champions, but Hastings had to go and spoil the night.

Friday nightís match against Hastings was going to determine the SEC champion, and after Hastings won two of the first three matches by a major decision it was clear Hastings wasnít going to cooperate with the Rangers plans.

Shawn Saxe got the Rangers on the board with a 4-0 decision at 125 lbs., but Hastings then won the next five matches.

When the 160 lbs. match rolled around the near capacity FLHS gym had a buzz stirring as Kolbow was looking to break the school record for career victories.

Kolbow squared off with Jesse Wellman of Hastings and it was clear from the start that Kolbow was going to win the match. As soon as Kolbow executed a take down to earn his two to three points he quickly let Wellman up, giving him free points, only to attack and do the same thing all over again.

Kolbow won the match by technical fall with the score 26-11, giving him 165 career victories as a Ranger and the new school record.

Kolbow broke two time state champion and University of Minnesota All-American Troy Marrís previous record of 164. Marr was on hand to congratulate Kolbow on his accomplishment.

ìWe keep records for one reason ó to break them,î Rangers head coach Bob Dettmer said. ìOver the years wrestlers have looked at the records in the book and they try to break some of those records. This record has been on the books since 1994.î

After Kolbowís match Lucas Munkelwitz won at 171 lbs. with a 14-3 major decision. Ryan Turry also won by a 15-6 major decision at 189 lbs. Derek Peterson won his match at 275 lbs. with a pin 1:03 into the match.

Hastings won the match 39-22 and took claim as SEC champions.

ìMy congratulations goes to the Hastings wrestlers and coaching staff,î Dettmer said.

WBL duals

Saturday the Rangers traveled to White Bear Lake to participate in the White Bear Lake Dual Tournament. The Rangers won all three dual meets to take the championship.

The Rangers started with a commanding 81-0 win over St. Paul Johnson.

Charlie Janssen (119 lbs.), Saxe, Matt Joyer (130 lbs.), Nick Zemke (135 lbs.), Eric Morris (140 lbs.) Patrick Taylor (145 lbs.), Kolbow, Turry and Peterson all won their matches by pins. Kevin Nelson won by a 6-0 decision at 103 lbs, while Luke Opsahl (112 lbs.), Brent Kolbow (152 lbs), Munkelwitz and Trevor Osterbauer (215 lbs.) all won by forfeit.

In the second round the Rangers defeated host and SEC rival White Bear Lake 49-11.

Turry, Osterbauer and Peterson all won by pin. Nelson, Janssen and Saxe won by decision. Morris, Taylor, Jordan Kolbow and Munkelwitz all won by major decision, while Opsahl won by forfeit.

In the championship round the Rangers faced section 7AAA foe Coon Rapids.

ìCoon Rapids is a power and theyíve been rated during the year so it was good for us to beat them,î Dettmer said. ìThe victory was good for seating, and good because we havenít beat them the last few years.î

Decision victories by Nelson, Opsahl, Joyer, Brent Kolbow, Munkelwitz and Turry, along with major decision wins by Janssen, Jordan Kolbow and a forfeit victory by Peterson gave the Rangers a 32-17 victory.

ìThe kids really wrestled tough in the tournament,î Dettmer said.

Friday the Rangers host the Forest Lake Quadrangular when they host Apple Valley, St. Francis and Minneapolis Henry.

ìThree of us will be in the top 10 in state, and when you get top 10 teams together anything can happen,î Dettmer said. ìIt comes down to whoís ready to wrestle. You definitely want to be in our gym Friday night to see some good wrestling action.î
