Graduation honors program adopted
Starting in 2009, graduates of Forest Lake High School will be able to earn diplomas under a new system that recognizes not only grade point achievement, but level of difficulty of class structure. The school board on Feb. 2 approved a new academic/honors scholar program proposal made in January by Principal Steve Massey. For seniors in 2009, students will graduate with ́honorsî if he or she achieves a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher. A student will earn ́scholarî designation depending on the number of advanced placement or College in the Schools courses taken during high school with a grade of ́Bî or higher. The board vote to approve the program found only one dissenter, member Eric Langness who voted ́noî because the proposal did not take into account student course work under the post-secondary enrollment option. The program was applauded by member Keith Dunham. ́This is absolutely terrific,î Dunham said.
