Clumsy, decompose and aquanaut were only a few of the challenging words kids grades five through eight had to spell in the district wide spelling bee on Thursday, Feb. 2.

Twenty-five students from 12 different local schools participated in the bee. Each school had its own bee and the winners went on to compete at the Central Learning Center.

Before the competition started each participant was given a medal by Jennifer Tolzmann, commending them for their accomplishment.

ìIt [giving medals to students] was done to have everyone start out feeling grand,î Tolzmann said, ìthey deserve that.î

Students who were given the awards before the competition started were: Dalton Baker and Mary Spiess from Columbus Elementary, James Moeller and Balke Ziemer from Forest Lake Elementary, Dustin Hillyard and Sam Doten from Forest View Elementary, Kyle Hallin, Shelby Taylor from Lino Lakes Elementary, Brittany Johanson and Samantha Lauth from Linwood Elementary, Claire Freier and Jackie Hudgens from Scandia Elementary, Chace Coles and Nathan Riedeman from Wyoming Elementary, Alex Perry and Shaunna Keast from Central Montessori Elementary, Mary Kasl and David Herman from St. Peterís Elementary, Hannah Carlson and Andrew Riley from Southwest Jr. High, Nicholas Jensen and Eric Moris from Century Jr. High and Jesse Wood, Rachel Marrier and Alex Nelson from the Alternative Learning Center.

The spelling bee went five rounds before there were only three students left. Sam Doten, Mary Kasl and Samantha Lauth were able to spell each of their words correctly to be in the top three. On the sixth round Lauth was the only student to spell her word correctly, making her the winner.

Lauth will move on to the Metro semi-final that is a written competition that is held the first week in March.

The winner of the semi-final will then move on to the Metro final. The Metro final, being held at the Science Museum of Minnesota, will be held on Thursday, March 23.
