Paul Kendrick wanted the Forest Lake High School girls hockey team to enter the section 7AA playoffs on a roll and two victories this week to give them a three game win streak is exactly what he was looking for.
The Rangers entered the week looking to win both games to end their regular season on a three game roll after they beat Park (Cottage Grove) 2-1 the week before. This week the Rangers opened the week of play with Woodbury.
ìI think they (Woodbury) were gunning for us as they really came out hard,î Kendrick said.
Kelsey Blumís first period goal against Woodbury last Tuesday proved to be the difference in the Rangers 4-3 win.Alexa Nelson and Anna Johnson scored second period goals, but Woodbury was able to score two of their own.
Paige Patchin scored a third period goal, but again, Woodbury was able to match with one of their own.
ìWe were playing like it was part of our playoff run and we buttoned down the fences on defense and played a solid game,î Kendrick said. ìThey (Woodbury) blocked a lot of our shots, but we battled through that.î
Rangers goalie Cassi Carpenter stopped 17 of 20 shots in the win.
The Rangers ended their regular season with a commanding 5-1 win over Mounds View Saturday night.
ìMounds View outshot us 30-20 in our first meeting and we won,î Kendrick said. ìOne of our goals for the game was to play tight defense as weíre getting ready for the playoffs and we did just that, only allowing 21 shots.î
Kathy Crudo had two goals in the win, while Blum, Johnson and Torri Shelafoe all had one apiece. Goalie Kim Fredrick made 19 saves.
ìWe scored three goals off the neutral zone transition and I think that was the big difference in the game,î Kendrick said. ìIt felt like we were always making things move towards the Mounds View end.î
The Rangers opened section 7AA play with a home play-in game against Duluth Denfeld/Central Tuesday night at the Maroon and Gold Arena. The winner of that game plays Cloquet tonight, Thursday. The game was played after the Times deadline. A full recap will be in the next issue.
