Alpine team falls to Hastings in first conference meet

Both the Forest Lake High School varsity boys and girls alpine ski teams were defeated by Hastings in their first conference meet Jan. 2 at Welch Village.

The Ranger girls lost 21-34, with five skiers earning points. Sophomore Carly Bass took third place with a combined time of 1:24:50, senior co-captain Becky Keller took fifth with a time of 1:27:33, freshman Nicky Kumerow took seventh with a time of 1:28:53, freshman Erin Eagan placed ninth with a time of 1:32:97 and German exchange student Nicole Janus placed tenth with a time of 1:36:12.

The boys team lost 18-37, with three skiers earning points: Senior co-captain Erik Stolberg took second with a combined time of 1:16:92, sophomore Kevin Gamelin placed fifth with a time of 1:24:14 and seventh-grader Shane Sampair took eighth with a time of 1:27:45.

ìSkiing is just a bunch of lefts and rights, the winner is the team that gets it done the fastest,î Rangers head coach Kyle Oberg said. ìIím very proud of the individual efforts in the race. As a team, weíre working to make turns in the right direction.î
