The Forest Lake High School girls basketball team may have lost two of their three games this week, but head coach Jen Wagner is encouraged by the effort the Rangers put forth in all three games.
The Rangers began the week with a 45-31 loss to ninth ranked Woodbury, then lost 54-45 to fourth ranked Cretin-Derham Hall before beating Totino Grace 49-44.
In the Rangers loss to Woodbury Renee Frericks, Abi Iverson and Andrea Thompson all had six points apiece.
ìDefensively we were getting after it,î Wagner said. ìKelsey Kosman was defending one of their (Woodburyís) players who is a Division I prospect for Iowa. We made them earn all the shots they took in the first half, but we only scored 13 points of our own.î
In Thursdayís loss to Cretin-Derham Hall, Frericks erupted for 21 points, while Anne Berner had 12.
ìWe put together a complete game, and while a team goal was to have three players in double figures, we did get two up there,î Wagner said. ìIt was a great basketball game for Cretin-Derham Hall and us. It was a lot of fun to be a part of, but when it came down to it they had a couple more athletes than we did, but we made them work for the victory and they knew it.î
The Rangers stayed positive and rebounded in a victory over Totino Grace where Frericks scored 18 points and Berner seven.
ìThe kids came out and understood they needed to work hard on defense and we hit some shots,î Wagner said.
With the Rangers at the half way point in the season Wagner feels the Rangers still have room for improvement in order for them to reach their potential, but the main focus right now is to play hard and get a Suburban East Conference victory.
ìThe kids have the tools they need, they just have to believe in themselves, their teammates and the coaches,î Wagner said. Theyíre fun to watch and theyíre great kids to work with though.î
The Rangers next game is at 7:30 Friday when they host Roseville.
