With new skills adding to the difficulty of their routines, the Forest Lake High School gymnastics team had a few falls this week that may have hurt their scores against White Bear Lake and at the MGGOA Invite this week.

Despite a strong warm-up against White Bear Lake last Thursday, the Rangers had some falls that hurt their score in a 142.375-137.825 loss.

ìI knew White Bear Lake was good, but tonight (last Thursday) we could definitely compete on their level,î Rangers head coach Nancy Elias said. ìWe had a lot of kids putting in new skills into their routines or skills they hadnít yet performed this year so I was excited to see how theyíd score.î

Notable performances against White Bear Lake included Nicole Paulsonís second place finish on the bars with a score of 9.05 and third place in the all-around with a score of 33.475. Stephanie Sampair took second in the all-around with a score of 34.60 and second on the beam with a score of 8.9.

Ashley Morris placed third on the beam with a score of 8.8, and Taylor Brett took third on the floor with a score of 8.925.

ìWe have to improve our execution,î Elias said. ìWe still have not had our best possible line up either.î

A bright spot for the Rangers included 24 personal best scores between the junior varsity and varsity teams. Of those 24 personal best performances, 10 included new skills.

MGGOA

At the 16 team MGGOA in Roseville Saturday the Rangers scored 134.70 points to tie for seventh place.

ìWe started out pretty well, although I thought for having four out of five kids stick their routines our scores were a little low,î Elias said. ìWe had pretty solid routines, then we fell apart on the floor. We had more falls on the floor which really isnít acceptable and I attribute to not doing enough full routines with new skills.î

The Rangers performed a little better on the vault and bars than they did on the floor, but Elias still felt the scores were a little lower than they should have been.

Sampair placed 11th on the beam with a score of 9.0, 15th in the all-around with a score of 25.5 and 20th on the bars with a score of 8.55. Maddie Crew had the best place for the Rangers with an eighth place finish on the beam with a score of 9.05.

Brett placed 14th on the bars with a score of 8.6, and Tasha Tyler placed 17th on the bars with a score of 8.55.

Roseville won the event with a score of 148.05, followed by Maple Grove (145.35), Eden Prairie (145.1), White Bear Lake (143.05), Hopkins (135.725) and Mahtomedi (134.75).

ìIt was a very strong field,î Elias said. ìMaple Grove came in averaging 147 points a meet with Roseville at 143, Eden Prairie at 144 and White Bear Lake at 140.î

The Rangers next event is today, Thursday, when they host Lakeville at 6:30 p.m.
