Friday nightís Forest Lake High School wrestling match against Stillwater was this yearís ìMain Eventî match and the community turned out in force to fill the gym and watch the Rangers defeat Stillwater 57-9.
ìIt was a fun night as a lot of people turned out,î Rangers head coach Bob Dettmer said.
The Rangers won all but two matches in the event.
Kevin Nelson started things off with a 6-4 decision victory at 103 lbs. Luke Opsahl won by a technical fall at 112 lbs.
Charlie Janssen won by pin just 45 seconds into the 119 lbs. match and Shawn Saxe won by pin at 125 lbs.
Matt Joyer won by an 8-3 decision at 130 lbs, while Nick Zemke won by a 12-7 decision at 135 lbs. Eric Morris won by pin at 140 lbs., as did Patrick Taylor at 145 lbs. and Jordan Kolbow at 160 lbs.
Ryan Turry won by a 15-5 major decision at 189 lbs, and Dustin Bentley won by a 9-3 decision at 215 lbs. Derek Peterson won by a pin at 275 lbs.
ìEven though the score was lopsided, it was a hard fought match,î Dettmer said.
ìWhen you combine talented wrestlers and a large Main Event crowd, you have the ingredients of the kind of high school wrestling that takes place at Forest Lake High School. Like us, Stillwater too has a good tradition in wrestling, making the evening entertaining.î
The Rangers were scheduled to wrestle in the Anoka Tournament over the weekend, but the tournament was canceled.
ìWe were kind of disappointed the tournament was canceled, but weíll see Anoka this weekend as we wrestle them in their version of the Main Event at their school Saturday,î Dettmer said.
The Rangers next event is today, Thursday, when they wrestle at Cretin-Derham Hall at 7:30 p.m.
Kolbow Update
Kolbow entered the week with a 13-0 record on the year, moving him within six victories of tying a Forest Lake High School record of 164 victories in a career set by two-time state champion Troy Marr. Kolbowís victory this week brings his season record to 14-0 and a career record of 159, only five away from tying the record.
