Since the city of Forest Lake implemented its new water restrictions, 450,000 gallons of water have been saved a day.
On Monday, July 10, Forest Lake released information on a new watering restriction that allows citizens to only water their lawns from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. and again from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Mike Tate, from the Public Works Department, said since the ban has gone into affect, the city has saved about a half a million gallons a day.
ìIt is working out so well, many cities are looking at adopting the same restriction,î Tate said.
The water restrictions will stay in affect until further notice.
Currently, the city is under watering restrictions that state homes with even numbered addresses can water on even numbered calendar days and residents who have odd numbered addresses can water on odd numbered calendar days.
The additional watering restriction states that on the days people can water, they can only water in two two-hour increments.
The city web site states that for those people who have a new lawn, they may apply for a temporary permit, at no cost, which would allow them to water new sod every day for up to 15 days or hydro-seed for up to 30 days.
People who fail to follow the new restrictions may be faced with a misdemeanor that can carry up to a $1,000 fine.
The alternative to the water restriction is a total watering ban.
Any questions regarding the water restrictions can be directed to City Administrator Chip Robinson at 651-209-9750. To apply for a temporary permit for new sod, call Becky at 651-209-9730.
