Residents of Columbus and Linwood townships will be paying an added tax to Anoka County in 2007 when they renew vehicle registrations. The Anoka County Board of Commissioners has unanimously passed a $5 per vehicle wheelage tax that is expected to raise $1.4 million annually for county road projects. Anoka County is the second metro county behind Dakota County to pass a wheelage tax in recent weeks. Unlike gas taxes, which are collected and divided statewide, money collected from a county wheelage tax stays in that county. ìThis $5 per vehicle wheelage tax will raise more money for road projects in Anoka County than a five cent increase in the gas tax,î said Anoka County Commissioner Dennis Berg, who chairs the countyís public works committee. All motorized vehicles, with the exception of motorcycles, are subject to the wheelage tax which is scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2007.
