Thank you for the insightful article in last weekís Times regarding the Forest Lake City Band returning to the July 4th parade.
Unfortunately, the Forest Lake High School Marching Band has not appeared in our July 4th parade for several years. Why?
Because the marching band program was cut several years ago, along with other programs, due to budget constraints.
Also absent has been a pep band to support our high school athletes.
Some may say, ìSo what? It doesnít affect me.î
I say, ìIt affects all of us!î Letís show our childrenóthe future of this countryóthat we care enough to support their programs.
These students may champion future industries and will defend our country in future conflicts.
Numerous studies have shown a direct correlation between music education and an increase in math scores. The U.S. must increase knowledge in math and science in order to keep pace globally.
In addition, participation in band, choir, and orchestra builds teamwork and self esteem.
These budding musicians may become engineers, accountants, doctors, architects, generals and government leaders. American students require a balanced education for our country to remain prosperous.
Unfortunately, a new school levy will not restore the marching band program, but it will keep the current music programs from disappearing.
When you hear the ìStar Spangled Bannerî and ìStars and Stripes Foreverî think about the Forest Lake City Band members as grade school musicians. How many would still be marching today if those programs had not existed?
As we approach July 4th, letís honor the sacrifices Americans have made for this great country by supporting and investing in our youth.
Not everyone can march in the July 4th parade. But, we can be patriotic and support our future leaders.
How? Vote ìyesî for the levy this November.
