Vetís Rest Camp honors 2 legislators

State Rep. Ray Vandeveer, R-Forest Lake, and Sen. Michele Bachmann, R-Stillwater received an award from the Disabled Veterans Rest Camp in appreciation for their work for Minnesotaís military personnel and veterans. Bachmann and Vandeveer authored legislation to protect and preserve the Disabled Veterans Rest Camp on Big Marine Lake in Washington County. The camp was slated to be included in a regional park, making it difficult for the facility to expand or make improvements to better serve disabled veterans. Under the legislation, the camp was removed from the regional park. In addition, the county, which had threatened to condemn the camp, was prohibited from using eminent domain or otherwise preventing access to the camp by disabled American veterans. The campís property tax exemption, which had been disallowed by Washington County, was also reinstated provided access to the camp was available to all disabled American veterans. ìI am honored and humbled to receive this award, and will continue to work for our veterans,î Vandeveer said. ìSupporting our veterans is important to this community and important to Minnesota,î Bachmann said of the legislation. ìIím pleased that this new law will safeguard the Disabled Veterans Rest Camp for future use.î
