Rangers win, must beat St. Francis twice
Forest Lake's hope for a trip to the Class AAA State Baseball Tournament faces a tough challenge on Wednesday. After a 6-1 rain-shortened win over Grand Rapids on Tuesday, Forest Lake must now defeat St. Francis twice to earn the state tourney bid. The Rangers dropped a 2-1 decision to St. Francis on Monday in the second round of the Final Four of Section 7AA in Duluth and Hermantown. The loss sent the Rangers into the losers bracket while the Saints, 2-0, could rest and await their opponent.
In Tuesday's five-inning game, Jeff Brooks scattered six hits to record the mound victory and doubled and singled to drive in a pair of runs to spark Forest Lake's win. Drew Cremisino also knocked in a pair of runs for the Rangers. Grand Rapids came into the tourney as the No. 1 ranked team in the state by the coaches' poll. Forest Lake, now 20-5 overall, was ranked second.
By mutual agreement of the teams, today's tournament round moves south and the 2 p.m. game will be played in Princeton. If Forest Lake wins, a second game will follow to determine the Section 7AAA champion.
