Student seat belt use increases
Students at Forest Lake High School are showing a higher rate of seat belt use, according to a student survey completed in May. On May 17, student members of SADD conducted a survey to cap a month-long campaign to increase student seat belt use. Of the 422 students drivers counted, 361 or 84.5 percent wore seat belts and 61 students or 14.5 percent did not. This compares to a survey one month earlier when 77 percent were buckled and 23 percent were not. For front seat passengers, the survey found 285 were observed and 211 or 74 percent were buckled while 74 or 26 percent were not. One month earlier, 60 percent were observed wearing a seat belt and 40 percent were not. ėGiven the recent tragedies involving Forest Lake High School students, we would expect seat belt use to spike for a brief period,î said Chuck Moses, SADD coordinator. ėHowever, it appears that seat belt use (by students) correlates directly to seat belt use by the general public.î Moses said the goal remains to reach 100 percent of drivers and passengers who are using seat belts.
