Six wrestlers headed to state

After taking second at the team 7AAA meet last week, the Forest Lake High School wrestlers battled back and won five individual section championships and are sending six wrestlers to the state individual meet from their performances at the 7AAA individual tournament this past weekend.

ìIt was another exciting wrestling event with many outstanding matches as the wrestlers took on the challenge to qualify for the state tournament,î Rangers head coach Bob Dettmer said.

At 103 lbs. Kevin Nelson just missed a trip to the state meet with a third place finish. Luke Opsahl placed fifth at 112 lbs.

Charlie Janssen was the first Rangers wrestler to advance to the state meet after he defeated Joel Dubiel of Anoka to take first place at 119 lbs.

Shawn Saxe took fifth at 125 lbs. Matt Joyer became the second Rangers wrestler to advance to the state meet when he took second place at 130 lbs. Joyer lost the championship match to Matt Baarson of Champlin Park.

Eric Morris was a fifth place finisher at 140 lbs.

Patrick Taylor, Jodan Kolbow and Luke Munkelwitz won their weight classes to move on to the state tournament. Taylor defeated Justin Dechein of St. Francis in the championship match at 145 lbs. Kolbow defeated Matt Curtis of Coon Rapids to claim first place at 152 lbs. Munkelwitz defeated Robby Kriesel of St. Francis to take first at 160 lbs.

Lee Smith took fifth at 171 lbs., Ryan Turry third at 189 lbs. and Trevor Osterbauer fourth at 215 lbs.

Derek Peterson defeated Blaine Hjelm of St. Francis to take first in the heavyweight weight class, advancing to state.

ìAfter the dust settled you would have to agree that section 7AAA is the toughest section in the state and Forest Lake parents and fans are the best,î Dettmer said. ìOur boys had a great tournament.î

The state meet is today, Thursday thru Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center.
