After falling to Stillwater at home on senior night the Forest Lake High School girls basketball team wanted to get some revenge as the two teams faced each other in the first round of the section 4AAAA playoffs.
Stillwater had a commanding 22-16 halftime lead, but the Rangers battled back and eventually had a lead in the second half, before losing 44-40, ending their season.
ìWhat was tough is we didnít make any free throws, we were zero for six from the line,î Rangers head coach Jen Wagner said. ìWe didnít give ourselves any opportunity to get to the free throw line either.î
Senior Renee Frericks led the Rangers in scoring with 16 points and five rebounds. Freshman Anne Berner scored 10 points, while pulling down four rebounds.
Freshman Gina Lange and junior Alisha Johnson each scored six points.
ìThese girls were able to fight all year long and they didnít give up in any situation, and they continued to battle for a victory against Stillwater,î Wagner said. ìBasketball is a game of runs and we just didnít have it in the end.î
The loss gave the Rangers an overall record of 10-17, an improvement from the 6-21 record the previous season where they didnít win any Suburban East Conference games.
ìI really could not have asked for a better first season at Forest Lake and as a head coach,î Wagner said.
ìI had great support from the administration, I always had the belief from the parents and kids that we were going to change things and then we started to get the community support.î
The hard work and dedication by the players is what Wagner credits the turn around to, and has her looking to next year.
ìWe can be the team other teams donít want to play,î Wagner said. ìLetís not just be satisfied. We should be grateful that we had a good season, but letís not be satisfied.î
