Kolbow wins state title

In his final high school wrestling match of his career Forest Lake High School wrestler Jordan Kolbow avenged a loss in the state championship match last year by defeating Matt Curtis of Coon Rapids to take home the title this year at 152 lbs.

In the first round Kolbow beat Brad Masche of Eden Prairie 5-3, advancing to the quarter finals. In the quarter finals he defeated Tony Hewitt of Grand Rapids with an impressive score of 13-2. In the semifinals Dave Bjorrkstrand of Burnsville was no match for Kolbow, as Kolbow won the match 9-2.

In the finals Kolbow defeated Curtis 7-3 to win the state title and earn All-State honors. Last year Kolbow made it all the way to the finals, but lost to Mitch Millner of Simley in the 145 lbs. weight class.

Kolbow finishes his career as the all time winningest wrestler in Rangers history with a career record of 183-41. Next year Kolbow will wrestle for the Big Ten champion University of Minnesota wrestling team.

With his state championship title Kolbow became the Rangers 14th state champion in team history.

Kolbow wasnít the only Rangers wrestler at the state meet, he was joined by five others.

Wrestling at 119 lbs. Charlie Janssen fell to Mike Litke of Rosemount in the first round, giving him a 26-5 season record. At 130 lbs. Matt Joyer lost to Derek Bomstad of Hutchinson in the first round, then lost to Ryan Clark of Irondale in wrestle backs. The loss gave Joyer a 23-15 season record.

Last year Patrick Taylor wrestled at 140 lbs. where he was 2-2. This year Taylor wrestled in the 145 lbs. weight class. In the first round he defeated Chris Rother of Irondale 8-0, but John Brandtjen of Simley sent him to the wrestle back rounds in the semi finals.

In his first wrestle back match Taylor defeated Stephan Henson of Rosemount, but then lost to Matt Morris of Albert Lea. Taylor finished the season with a 31-10 record.

Wrestling at 160 lbs. Luke Munkelwitz earned All-State honors with a fifth place finish. Munkelwitz won his first round match with an 8-1 victory over Brett Scharmer of St. Cloud Apollo. In the second round Munkelwitz defeated Jesse Borchardt of Spring Lake Park.

In the next round Munkelwitz fell to Derek Skala of Owatonna, pitting him against Chris Perez of Mankato West. Munkelwitz won that match, then lost to Robby Kriesel of St. Francis.

Munkelwitz finished the season with a 31-9 record.

The final Rangers wrestler to compete was Derek Peterson at 275 lbs. where he lost to Dirk Wilkins of Lakeville South in the first round. Peterson lost 12-10 in an overtime match.

In the wrestle backs Peterson won his first match over Mike Abrego of St. Cloud Apollo, but then lost to Bill Lundblad of Simley. Derek Peterson - 31-5 season record, 1-2 at state.
