District 52 Republicans will meet in Hugo on Thursday, May 18 to endorse candidates to run for the Senate District 52 seat and likely the House District 52A seat.

The endorsing convention became necessary following the Republican endorsement of District 52 Sen. Michele Bachmann of Stillwater to run for Congress in the Sixth District. She was endorsed in Monticello on Saturday.

District 52A Rep. Ray Vandeveer, R-Forest Lake, confirmed on Monday he will run for Bachmannís State Senate seat and will stand for endorsement when the party meets at Hugo City Hall at 7:30 p.m. on May 18.

If Vandeveer is endorsed as expected on May 18, delegates in District 52A must endorse a new party choice to run for the House seat. Vandeveer previously was endorsed to run for reelection in 52A.

One potential candidate has emerged.

Bob Dettmer, a Forest Lake High School teacher and coach, has contacted delegates indicating an interest to seek party endorsement to run for the House 52A seat.

The Republican candidate likely will run against Forest Lake School Board member Rob Rapheal, Scandia, who is the DFL-endorsed candidate in 52A.
