Hugo crash claims life of Forest Lake teen

An 18-year-old from Forest Lake lost his life late Monday night when his car left a Hugo road and struck a tree.

Ryan Joseph Hegg died at Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he had been airlifted following the crash at 11:56 p.m. near the intersection of Fondant Ave. N. and 140th St., according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

According to police reports, Hegg was traveling west on 140th St. when his vehicle left the roadway and first struck a utility pole before striking a tree. Emergency response workers extricated Hegg from the vehicle and he was airlifted by helicopter to the St. Paul hospital.

County deputies, Forest Lake police, Hugo fire and rescue and the White Bear Lake Ambulance responded to the call.

The accident remains under investigation by the sheriff's office and the Minnesota State Patrol.

Other police news

In other police news, officers in Forest Lake are investigating a pair of felony thefts from Menards, 22800 Everton Ave. N.

On May 11, the store reported an overnight theft of several rolls of copper tubing with value of $10,000. The thieves broke through a fence on the south side of the building and stole the copper.

On Sunday, the store reported a second theft of the same nature. In this crime, more copper conduit valued at just under $1800 was stolen.

No arrests have been made.

Teen on bike hurt

A juvenile riding his bicycle in the 500 block of S. Lake St. was injured when he was struck by a car at 2:47 p.m. last Friday. Police said the boy, 14, was taken to Fairview Lakes Regional Medical Center, Wyoming, with an ankle injury.

On May 8-10, city officers and county deputies launched the first wave of the Safe & Sober patrol that is targeting speeding, stop sign violations and seat belt compliance.

During the three days of extra patrols, officers wrote more than a dozen tickets for seat belt violations and a number of tickets for speeding and stop sign infractions.

More Safe & Sober patrols are planned this month.
