Rangers split 2 SEC tennis outings
Mounds View handed the Forest Lake boys tennis team a 7-0 defeat on May 9, proving why the Mustangs are the top-ranked team and defending state champion.
The loss to the Mustangs and a Forest Lake victory, 6-1 over Park of Cottage Grove on May 11, left the Rangers with a 7-6 record.
ìWe actually played well against Mounds View,î Forest Lake coach Greg Patchin said.
Seniors Luke Odegaard and Dan Cromwell battled Scott Martin and Kyle Olson at No. 1 doubles but fell in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. At No. 2 doubles, Rangers Rob Gavanda and Cal Kerkhoff were defeated 6-2, 6-1.
Rangers Josh Magistad, Josh Vandenburg and Teddy Steiner all lost in singles play. Forest Lake No. 3 doubles team of Spencer Conrad and Paul Hill, two sophomores, were defeated in straight sets.
Patchinís crew had a better go of it against Park, claiming wins in six of the seven contests. Odegaard returned to singles play where he posted a 6-0, 6-0 win. Senior Jeff Kohler won a No. 3 singles 5-7, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 4 singles Spencer Conrad also won in three sets, 6-7, 7-5, 6-0. Forest Lake also claimed all three points at doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, Gavanda and Kerkhoff won 7-6, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Forest Lakeís Joe Mitchell and Kyle Vandenburg won easily, 6-0, 6-1 while at No. 3 doubles, Teddy Steiner and Spencer Conrad won in three sets 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
