Rangers defeat Cretin 7-5;
play Hastings Friday for SEC crown
If Forest Lake can avenge an early-season loss to Hastings on Friday night, the Rangers will earn their second consecutive Suburban East Conference baseball championship. Forest Lake took an important step forward in that quest Wednesday by stopping Cretin-Derham Hall, 7-5, on the Cretin field in St. Paul. The win, Forest Lake's second this season over Cretin, pushed the Rangers to 13-2 in the SEC. Hastings, 11-3 in the SEC, plays Cretin today (Thursday). A win will leave Hastings one game behind Forest Lake heading into Friday's game at The Ballpark at Schumacher Field in Forest Lake.
In Wednesday's victory, the Rangers overcame an early 3-0 deficit. Trip Schultz's long solo homer to right ignited a three-run fourth inning. Forest Lake added three more runs in the sixth and then used solid defense to keep CDH in check. Schultz scattered five hits in six innings of mound work to improve his record to 6-1. Jed Hanson worked the seventh to nail down the victory.
Friday's 7 p.m. game is "Fill The Stands Night" and the Rangers hope to draw their largest crowd of the season. The stadium record is 700 plus fans and the Forest Lake booster club believes that total can be topped. Coach Brian Raabe's club, 15-2 overall, will wrap up the regular season at 1 p.m. Saturday when New Ulm visits Forest Lake and next Tuesday night at Chisago Lakes in non-conference games. "You get special years in high school baseball and this is one of those years," the coach said.
