District 52 Republicans on Thursday endorsed Rep. Ray Vandeveer of Forest Lake to run for the Minnesota State Senate and Forest Lake High School teacher Bob Dettmer of Forest Lake to run for the Minnesota House from District 52A. Vandeveer was the only candidate to seek the Senate endorsement. He hopes to replace Sen. Michele Bachmann of Stillwater who is running for the United States Congress in the Sixth District.

With Vandeveer electing to seek a new state position, the party was forced to select a new candidate to run for Vandeveer's House seat that serves Forest Lake, Scandia, Linwood and Columbus. After two ballots, Dettmer was the successful candidate. He is a long-time teacher and coach in Forest Lake and a Gulf War veteran. He defeated Pat Turgeon of Centerville for the nomination.
