School test scores keep improving

Forest Lake area students continue to perform above state average on BST test, the district reported this week. More Forest Lake Area Schools tenth-graders passed the Basic Skills writing test this year than last ó and for the seventh year in a row ó students outperformed students across the state. Ninety-six percent of tenth-graders at the high school passed the test on the first try, compared to 93 percent of students statewide. Last year, 94 percent of tenth-graders at the high school passed the writing test. At the Forest Lake Area Learning Center, 83 percent of students passed the test on the first time ó up from 82 percent last year. The written composition test is one of three tests students must pass in order to be eligible to receive a diploma. Students who do not pass the exams on the first try have several opportunities to retake the exam. Next year is a transition year, with students in both ninth and tenth grade taking the writing test. In 2007, all students in ninth grade will take the writing exam.
