Homestead applications due Dec. 15
Washington County residents who need to file homestead applications face a deadline of Dec. 15, the county said this week. Residents must contact the county assessor to file a homestead application on or before Dec. 15 if they are in the following categories. ïProperty owners or qualifying relatives of property owners who have changed residences during the past year and are using the property for homestead purposes; or ïProperty owners or qualifying relatives of property owners whose use of the property has changed during the past year; or ïThose who are currently using the property for homestead purposes, and the property was not receiving the homestead classification in the past. Those who sell, move, or for any reason no longer qualify for the homestead classification, are required to notify the county assessor within 30 days of the change in homestead status. Failure to notify the county assessor within this 30-day period is punishable by recalculation of tax as non-homestead, in addition to a penalty equal to 100 percent of the homestead benefits.
