Montzka retains Chisago County Board seat

Ben Montzka not only won his reelection bid to the Chisago County Board on Tuesday, but did so in grand fashion.
With all four precincts in District 4 counted early Wednesday, Montzka far outdistanced challenger Russ Goudge. The unofficial tally showed Montzka with a 2918 to 1272 vote victory over Goudge. Montzka cornered 69.6 percent of the vote 30 percent for the challenger.
Montzka thanked his many supporters for the vote of confidence and said he looked forward to working with other area leaders.
In the city of Wyoming, Mayor Sheldon Anderson ran unopposed and claimed 1149 votes for a new two-year term.
In the race for council, incumbent Joe Zerwas won reelection with 1009 votes, but incumbent Ted Phillips lost to Gary Menne, 712-677.
In two hotly contested state races, incumbent District 17B Rep. Pete Nelson, R-Lindstrom, lost to DFL challenger Jeremy Kalin. Kalin had 9629 votes to 9425 for Nelson.
In Senate District 17, another DFL challenger, Rick Olseen, a current Chisago County commissioner, defeated incumbent Sen. Sean Nienow, R-Cambridge, 17,355 to 16,919. Third-party candidate Bill Neuman had 2278 votes.
