After three meets into the young season, the girls cross country team is rounding into good shape. A week after winning the Cambridge-Isanti Invitational, the team collected a second place finish at the St. Francis Invitational.
ìI donít think that itís a big surprise because weíve had a lot of hard work throughout the team,î head coach Kristen Fairman said, ìand the girls are just really stepping up.î
One runner whoís enjoyed herself over the past two weeks is senior captain Kristi Buerkle, who came in second at Cambridge, and seventh at St. Francis, with a time of 15:41.
Buerkle mentioned how the team is having a great year, and Fairman gives some of the credit to Elizabeth Peterson (12th, 15:53) and Bridget Holmes (26th, 16:29), who have both really improved from 2005.
With the team becoming more of a cohesive unit, Fairman is interested to see how the girls fare this weekend Milaca Mega Meet.
ìI think weíre going to get our first glimpse of how weíre comparing to the schools that may have some faster runners,î she said. ìThis will be a good chance for them to really push themselves a bit harder than they have been.î
