Helping Columbus make a deal

Sen. Ray Vandeveer, R-Forest Lake, cradles his chin during a hearing of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Committee April 10. Vandeveer is the author of a bill that is attempting to switch lieu of taxes payments, about $34,000 a year, to the city of Columbus — the former Columbus Township. Columbus Mayor Mel Mettler, seated left, told the committee the city hadn’t anticipated the loss of the revenue when it incorporated. Seated next to the mayor is Anoka County Commissioner Rhonda Sivarajah — a Department of Natural Resources official sits foreground. The committee amended the bill to continue in lieu of taxes payments to Columbus as long as it permits shooting and hunting in wildlife management areas. (Photo By Tim Budig)
