They may have a pretty lofty nickname at Columbia Heights High School, but after the synchronized swimming figures meet against Forest Lake on April 10, it was the Hylanders who ended up on the bottom of matching 29-0 scores in both the varsity and junior varsity meets.
“The girls did awesome!” Rangers head coach Laura Davison shared. “Their figures have improved so much from the beginning of the season, we are ready now to change focus a bit and really work on routines.”
Davison admitted that Frances VanSloun had a rough night against Stillwater, where she ended in an uncharacteristic seventh place, but she was back in form against Columbia Heights.
The senior led the Forest Lake sweep, as Alissa Moberg, Carrie Peterson, Heidi Merrier, Ann Husfeldt, Laura Oberg-Hauser and Heidi Bolenbaugh wrapped up the top seven positions. Only a half-point separated VanSloun, Moberg and Peterson.
The junior varsity was just as impressive, and they are having a great season despite not having one girl with some sort of experience.
“They are all brand new swimmers,” Davison pointed out, “so when we go up against a team, we do not have any idea what to expect.”
Andrea Gaytan moved into the No. 1 slot, while Kirsten Sewall, Erin Liljedahl, Whitney Anderson, Teresa Brockman, Anna Brennhofer and Brooke Ewert completed the list of seven.
This was the final figures-only meet of the season, with the girls now moving into routines. The Rangers will compete at Greenway Grand Rapids on Saturday, April 21, and then host Osseo on April 24.
