Ice-out on FL comes in March again
Saturday, March 31 has been declared the official ice out day for the Forest Lake chain of lakes.
Corbett Johnson, who heads a team of local ice watchers, said the ice on three lakes was officially off by late in the afternoon on March 31. Most of the ice had broken up by earlier in the day, he said.
The March 31 ice out marks the fourth time in the past 10 years that the ice has gone out in March, Johnson said.
A research of recent records kept by Johnson show that since 1971, the ice has gone out only six times during the month of March.
In 2006, the ice out was declared on April 9.
The latest date for the ice to clear during Johnson’s 37 years of monitoring the lake was April 27th in 1975.
Johnson is assisted by fellow ice observers Earl Lellman and Mick Corbett.
