FL Relay for Life raises $208,000

Forest Lake Relay for Life teams were all smiles this weekend as they learned their fundraising efforts produced $208,000 for cancer research and the American Cancer Society.

By 6 a.m. on Saturday, August 4 the entire Relay organization listened as Chair Nancy Rosman announced the “Grand Total.”
Every year Relay sets a goal for the teams to raise. This year’s goal was $180,000.

Listed below are just a handful of the many accomplishments made by various Relay for Life members.

• 120 Survivors participated in the 14th Annual Relay for Life.

• Calvin Spitzer walked 109 laps (27.25 miles) in support of his girlfriend Dana who has cancer.

• Ashley Corbett received a $1000 ACS Youth Survivor Scholarship.

• Team Looney Tunes raised over $20,000, which is a record breaker for the Forest Lake Relay.

• Jean Peikert was the adult top fundraiser with $5139.90 and Brittny Beck was the youth top fundraiser with $422.

• Four brave souls stood in front of a crowd to get their hair cut for Lock of Love. Sue Schurr, Allie Charest, Nicole Holmes and Claire Kielsa each donated at least eight inches of their hair. The hair will be turned into wigs for children who have lost their hair due to complications from cancer.

Cortney Winkler and Katie Olson from Styl'n By The Lake and Karen Johnson from A Cut Above, all donated their time and talents to not only cut the donated hair, but then to restyle the volunteer’s hair.

Rosman said that after everyone rests up, the group will meet in October to set the goals for the 15th Annual Relay for Life.
