Need a new home? FL students have one
Need a new house? Students at Forest Lake High School have just the ticket.
Students at a high school might not be the normal source to seek out when buying a new home, but that's the case right now in Forest Lake.
Bidding will open soon on a new home constructed this school year by students in the construction trades program and demonstration contractors.
The 1350 square foot home features three bedrooms, two baths, a main level laundry, custom oak cabinets, Andersen windows and many other niceties.
The one-story home was recently completed and is ready to be moved from its high school construction site to the buyer's location. The home stands on a two-sided permanent block foundation designed for an easy move.
Kevin Rivard, a veteran teacher in the high school industrial technology department, supervised the project.
The schedule
The school board on Feb. 1 gave the green light to commence the advertising and sale process for the house.
The bid advertisement is slated for printing on Feb. 15 and Feb. 22.
The bid opening will take place on March 15, 6 p.m., in the board room at the District Office Building.
The bid award would be made by the school board on March 29. A minimum bid of $49,900 plus 6.5 percent state sales tax will be attached to the public bidding process. Bidders will also need to provide a $1000 check at the time of bidding for bid security.
School officials hope to have the home off the site before the end of the school year.
With the permanent block foundation, more home building projects from students enrolled in the senior high school construction trades program are expected.
