Alpine teams split first meets
The new year brings the start of conference meets for the alpine ski teams, and in their opener against Hastings on Thursday, Jan. 4, the Rangers had mixed results.
The boys team was victorious, but the girls team wasn't able to put enough points on the board to earn a win, despite capturing the second- and third place spots.
The boys won 39-16, and were led by sophomore Scott Brunjes, who posted his first-ever Suburban East Conference win. Rounding out the top four places were all Rangers: junior Brett Stolberg (pictured), junior Kevin Gamelin and 8th grader Shane Sampair.
Other skiers to contribute points for Forest Lake were junior Paul Charpentier in eighth place, and 8th grader Tyler Raarup in ninth.
It couldn't have been any closer for the girls team as they were edged by the Raiders, 23-32.
Leading the way for Forest Lake were junior Carly Bass and sophomore Nicky Kumerow, who finished in second and third, respectively.
Additional point-earners for the Rangers were Kara Gamelin in seventh place and senior Jesse Johnson, who came in ninth.
CRETIN MEET
The boys and girls were right back at it on Monday, when they served as hosts at Wild Mountain to Cretin-Derham Hall.
This time, the girls were victorious by a lopsided score of 54-1. Bass and Kumerow moved up from Thursday's results, with Bass taking first and Kumerow coming in second.
For the boys, they lost to the Raiders, 31-24, but Stolberg and Kevin Gamelin were the first and second place winners.
