Burglars hit the American Legion Post 225 in Forest Lake early Sunday morning, stealing two safes and making off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The crime was reported to Forest Lake police at 6:32 a.m. on Sunday, said Chief of Police Clark Quiring. Quiring said the crime remains under investigation and the loss of Legion proceeds is being called "considerable" by the police.

Quiring said the crime took place at some point after the Legion Post, 355 W. Broadway Ave., closed on Saturday night. There were no signs of forced entry from the outside of the building.

Doors to several internal offices were forced open, he said. Two safes containing business proceeds were removed, the chief said.

The crime is similar in nature to a burglary several weeks ago at Upperdeck Grill & Bar, 55 S. Lake St., where a safe was stolen. In that crime, police believe the burglars were able to hide inside the business prior to closing and made off with the safe during the night.

Crash claims life

A man from Harris was killed in a vehicle crash north of Wyoming early Sunday morning, the Chisago County Sheriff's Office reported.

Joshua Jacob Humphreys, 18, was killed in a two-car head-on collision on CR-18 at Iris Avenue in Lent Township at 1:53 a.m. Sunday.

According to the sheriff's office report, deputies on the scene found two men trapped in the vehicles and a third passenger who had been ejected from a vehicle. Stacy-Lent Fire was called to extricate the two men, one from each vehicle.

A North Air helicopter transported one of the victims to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale while the other two were taken to Fairview Lakes Medical Center in Wyoming where they were airlifted to North Memorial.

Humphreys died at North Memorial. The other crash victims were in critical and stable condition.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff's office said in a release.

Officers from the Wyoming Police Department assisted at the scene.
