Golf trio battles Wisconsin -
Lewis, Jeans, Kelly picked for Junior Cup
Maybe Forest Lake is becoming Minnesota’s source for young, talented golfers.
Considering that both the boys and girls high school teams qualified for the state tournament, it’s fitting to see three players were chosen to represent the state at the 2007 Minnesota-Wisconsin PGA Junior Cup Matches, which took place in Lake City, MN on July 8-9.
Coming out of Forest Lake were Kyle Lewis, Douger Jeans and Betsy Kelly. This is the second year for Jeans, who was fresh off a first place finish in his age group (boys 13-15) at the 2007 Westfield Junior Minnesota PGA Championship (73-75-148). Kelly shot a two-day total of 160 to take fifth place in the girls 13-15 bracket.
Formed in 1998, the Minnesota-Wisconsin Ryder Cup-type team event consists of 12 boys and 12 girls playing for Minnesota, taking on a group of 24 who were selected to compete for Wisconsin. Heading into this year’s challenge, Wisconsin held a slight 5-4 advantage.
One point is awarded for winning a match outright, and half a point is given for a tie. The juniors play four-ball matches in the morning, and singles matches in the afternoon.
On Sunday, Jeans teamed up with Austin Wilson of Eden Prairie and those two won their match, 3 & 2.
Lewis was paired with Stephen Bidne of Roseville, but they were defeated 4 & 3.
Kelly and Steffi Neisen of New Prague won their match 2 & 1.
Wisconsin would take the first day, 7-5.
On Monday, Jeans kept up his winning ways, with a 3 & 2 victory over Kyle Braska of Waunakee, WI.
Lewis finished the second day 2 UP, and Kelly won her pairing, 5 & 3 over AJ Selig of Appleton.
With the Wisconsin team taking Day 2 by the score of 13-10.5, the Minnesota golfers would be defeated for the second straight year, by a two-day total of 20.5-15.5.
