Massey: More students taking AP, CIS

The number of students taking college-level courses is growing but more work remains, Steve Massey, principal at Forest Lake High School reported to the ISD 831 School Board on June 28. The principal said some 850 Advanced Placement or College In The Schools courses were taken by high school students in 2006, the last reporting year available. In that year, Massey said the high school recorded a 57 percent increase in the number of students taking AP and CIS courses. The CIS program is in partnership with the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State University at Marshall. Massey said he was encouraged by the growth but said it was important to continue to strive to encourage more students to enroll in classes with rigor that help prepare students for post-secondary education. As part of the high school’s mission, Massey said it was the goal to prepare all students for some form of college, with college broadly defined to allow many educational paths following high school. This past school year the high school offered 16 AP courses and about a dozen CIS classes that carry credits transferable to most colleges.
