Celebrate the true meaning of Independence Day

Rep. Michele Bachmann
Guest Columnist

Today, as we gather at parades, family barbecues and fireworks displays to celebrate the birth of our nation, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on what Independence Day really means.

Some 231 years ago, a fledgling group of thirteen colonies joined together over their differences to declare their independence from Great Britain.

In doing so, the visionary members of the Second Continental Congress, led by Thomas Jefferson, laid the groundwork for the rights and liberties which form the foundation of the United States.

Although many years have passed, Americans still hold dear the promises of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” and we can be proud that today our nation is the greatest republic in the world.

We pride ourselves on our dedication to freedom: freedom of religion, freedom to exchange ideas, and freedom to decide how we each will write our own page in the history of America, and we are thankful that we may enjoy these liberties without tyranny or oppression.

I urge all Americans to take a moment to remember the brave actions of our forefathers as well as those who are now fighting to bring our message of freedom and prosperity to those who have never known it.

That these ideals have remained strong in our hearts and minds for 231 years is evidence that they are worth protecting. Happy Independence Day to you and yours, and God bless America.
