It’s win city for VFW baseball team

Even with the loss of a handful of players to the Legion baseball team, the boys who make up the VFW squad are barreling through a summer that is heavy on the wins and light on the losses.
Before the team headed into three games at the start of July, head coach Jim Bourque was pleased with how his boys were performing.
“I like the team we have. They are all blue-collar players and they’re scrappy,” he said. Every one of them plays an important role on the team. We are good on defense and have a lot of pitching.”
Bourque expressed a small concern with the offense, but after a double-header sweep on Friday, June 29 against Fridley, Forest Lake was riding high with a 9-2 league record and was 11-3 overall.
In the opening 7-3 victory over Fridley, Michael Swenson was a prime example of the team’s pitching depth, as he earned the complete-game accolades.
The second match-up was more of an offensive showcase as every player on the squad had at least one hit in the 14-3 win.
“They are a good group of guys and they are fun to coach,” Bourque said.
After a double-header at home against North Branch on Monday night, the boys will have some time off before hosting Cooper, Thursday, July 12.
