Scandia mining ordinance has review

Fred Heinonen
Scandia Area Reporter

Scandia City Planner, Richard Thompson presented a 24-page, partially updated mining ordinance at the planning commission and city council meeting on Tuesday, June 5.

Most of this meeting time was taken up by the arduous and exhaustive page by page, paragraph by paragraph review of this second draft. Thompson had presented his first draft for city review on April 3.

He met with a couple of planning commission and council members and the city administrator to review the draft prior to this second review. The document required many corrections and clarifications because of duplication, omissions, and much ambiguity.

Thompson also introduced, for evaluation, many update suggestions he received from citizen, John Lindall. Several miners contributed constructively to the discussions.

The updated draft ordinance was basically accepted with suggested changes, but is subject to additional changes at the public hearing scheduled for July 10.

Final plat action

The planning commission and city council last week approved the final plats for White Rock Ranch and for the Tii Gavo Open Space Conservation Subdivision.

White Rock Ranch is a 14-lot subdivision with six Scandia lots on the west side of White Rock Lake.

Tii Gavo is a 37-lot subdivision on 154 acres bordered by the east bay of Big Marine Lake, Newgate Ave, Lakamaga Trail North, and the Lakamaga Girl Scout Camp to the west.

City personnel

The city council appointed Mike Egelkraut to a full-time city maintenance worker position from a field of 49 applicants. He has experience with the Chisago County Highway Department, Northwest Airlines and a road construction company.

The council appointed Kristin Stenborg to a part-time seasonal recreation program youth leader position.

The council also appointed Ian Soreno and Neil Taurinskas as skateboard instructors.

Other items

After evaluating two bids, the council selected Scandia Heating & Air Conditioning to replace a Lennox HVAC unit at the community center with a Trane Model TDX120C960C for $8071.

Next meeting

The next Scandia City Council meeting is set for 7 p.m.,Tuesday, June 19.
