The ISD 831 Board of Education on March 8 voted to approve two policies that address harassment and violence and anti-bullying. Harassment and Violence Policy 425 was approved after a third reading. Anti-Bullying Policy 541 was approved after a second reading. Board member Eric Langness was the only dissenter in two 5-1 votes with member Joe Grafft absent on March 8. Langness said he did not object to the content in the two policies but said he felt the board could have done more. He said additional input from district resident Dr. James Heck would have been valuable. Board member David Gay and others on the board agreed much work had gone into reviewing and revising both board policies and both will be reconsidered in another 10 months. Gay suggested Heck might serve the board well by being appointed to the board’s policy committee which is charged with reviewing and updating policies for the full board on an annual basis.
