Biofuels site pushed in area

A study exploring the possibility of locating a renewable energy biofuels research and production facility in Isanti, Chisago, or Pine County is being sought at the Legislature.

District 17B Rep. Jeremy Kalin, DFL-Lindstrom, and District 17 Sen. Rick Olseen, DFL-Harris, are calling for the $300,000 study to look at the economic and technical viability of such a facility.

Kalin, appearing before the House Energy Finance and Policy Committee on Monday argued that biofuel production offers another option for farmers plying the sandy soils of the region.

Their land is their 401Ks, he said.

Dave Whitney, a land use activist in Chisago County, explained the county offers some 180,000 acres of land for possible use in biofuel production.

Indeed, the concept fits perfectly into the comprehensive use plan officials have formulated for the county, he explained.

Support for the study also came from the Chisago County Board of Commissioners.

County Board Chairman Mike Robinson said that two-thirds of the residents of Chisago County work elsewhere.

He argued a biofuels facility could help reverse the trend.

Kalin’s bill was passed by the Energy Finance and Policy Committee and referred to a finance committee.

Olseen’s bill also went through a committee and passed onto a finance committee.

“They’re going to throw all these things (bills) together and see what comes out,” said Olseen.

“I’ve had a number of bills moved into finance. I don’t know where they’ll come out,” he said.

Kalin and Olseen are not the only lawmakers pushing for a feasibility study.

Another bill calls for funding for a renewable energy study on the White Earth Band of Chippewa Reservation in Northern Minnesota.
