Bachmann backs NCLB overhaul

Sixth District Congresswoman Michele Bachmann co-authored legislation introduced by Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) that would significantly impact the No Child Left Behind law, which is up for reauthorization this year. The legislation would allow states more flexibility to improve local education without the red tape and unfunded mandates of NCLB. “Education is the fundamental building block of our society and we need to make sure we are giving children an opportunity to succeed,” Bachmann said. “Minnesota is a leader in education and we need to keep it that way by ensuring teachers, parents and local school board members have control over the classroom - not bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.” The Academic Partnerships Lead Us to Success Act of 2007 provides states and local communities with maximum freedom and flexibility to determine how to best improve academic achievement and implement education reforms. The bill allows states to develop their own unique standards and tailor them to the needs of their students, while still allowing them to receive federal education funding.
